Crusty French Bread

Ingredients

1 package yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 Tbsp sugar
2 tsp salt
1 Tbsp shortening, melted
4 cups all purpose flour
cornmeal

Directions

In a mixing bowl dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup water. Add sugar, salt, shortening, and remaining water;stir untill dissolved. Add flour and stir untill smooth. (do not knead) Cover and let rise 1 hour.

Turn onto floured surface. Knead a few times if you want. Divide in half; let rest 10 minutes. Pull into a rectangle and roll into a loaf shape. Pinch to seal. Place seem side down onto greased baking sheets sprinkled with cornmeal. Sprinkle tops with cornmeal. Cover and let rise till doubled (about 45 minutes). With a very sharp knife make 5 slits accross top of loaves. Bake at 400 for 20-30 minutes or untill lightly browned. I brush the loaves with a little garlic oil when they come out. Make sure you enjoy a few pieces before it cools completely!!!
